Infrastructure and Energy Efficiency Capital
Project Progress Report:
The plans have been approved, the lowest
responsible bidders have been awarded their projects, and material and
equipment are in the process of being ordered. The approval phase and the
bid award phase each took slightly longer than anticipated. As this project
is seasonally sensitive, the delays caused us to miss the first window of
opportunity in the fall of 2011, so the actual construction is slated to
begin in the spring of 2012. The scope of this project includes removing
and replacing all the old shingles on the sloped roof and adding much more
insulation, adding a gable to the flat roof section in line with the current
sloped roof, replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning
equipment with high efficiency, up-to-date equipment and adding a Building
Management System for better control of the indoor environment. |

E-mailing of Library Notices:
For patrons who have entered their e-mail
address into their borrower records, the Library will begin sending ALL
circulation notices via e-mail rather than sent by “snail mail”. Notices
include alerts for requested material now available, courtesy reminders,
first overdue notice and final bill notices. The Library has been sending
alerts and courtesy notices by e-mail for the last 18 months, and this
option has proved popular with our patrons. We are expanding the notices
that are sent by e-mail and saving postage costs.

Internet and
Minors:
After considerable thought and discussion, the
Amityville Public Library no longer requires prior parental permission for a
child (through 6th grade) or a teenager (7th grade
through 17 years of age) to access the Internet on Library computers.
The digital age has impacted Libraries
considerably. Many of the resources required by students for their school
work are available through the Internet. Examples include: access to
historical newspapers, literary, historic or scientific research sources and
periodical databases. By not having Internet access, students are unable to
access the full scope of Library materials needed for their assignment or
research needs.
Library computers are filtered. Computers in
the Children’s Department are more heavily filtered than those in the Young
Adult/Adult Departments. Library computers are accessible through a
self-service reservation system which uses the patron’s Library card. The
Library understands that some parents will prefer to restrict their child’s
access to the Internet. To do so, a parent needs to contact the Circulation
Department of the Library and request that their child’s Library card be
blocked for in-house Internet access. It will be necessary to have the
Library card bar code number for this purpose. The request may be made in
person, or by telephone. |

Wi-Fi Hotspot: |

For your convenience, the Library is a Wi-Fi hot spot. Use your laptop
anywhere on the main floor of the Library in order to access the World Wide
Web. |
