Use of Children’s Department

General

Seating in the Children’s Department of the Amityville Public Library is reserved for use by children and their accompanying parent or caregiver.  (Caregiver must meet the criteria stated in the “Unattended Children Policy”.) Adult and Young Adult patrons are welcome to utilize the resources of the Children’s Department by perusing the collection, selecting material and receiving assistance from Library staff, however, must take the resources to seating in the main reading room of the Library.

Electronic Devices

Other than OPACs (On-Line Public Access Catalogs), use of computers, tablets and other electronic devices located in the Children’s Department is limited to children only.  For Library purposes, children are defined as ages starting from infant to 6th grade.

Safety and Wellbeing

The safety and wellbeing of patrons of all ages, particularly that of children, is a major concern to the Library.  Though staff will always respond with care and concern, they cannot assume responsibility for the safety and comfort of minors.  Children must be attended and adequately supervised at all times.  Responsibility for the welfare and behavior of children using the Library rests with the parent/caregiver.

Policies

In addition to the “Use of the Children’s Department” policy, use is governed by other Library policies including, but not limited to:

  • Maintenance of Public Order
  • Tutoring in the Library
  • Unattended Children
